Quarter 1 Value Project

My master artist is Michelangelo. I used his "Head of a Young Man" as an I idea on how to shade the human features. The way he uses soft shading, makes the portraits look more lifelike and realistic. The way he draws the person from the side also helped me to understand the shading area of the face.

My current artist is Michelle Cox. I used her various portraits of present day people to try can help me understand the human features and how they can be made to look realistic. Her technic of dark shading makes the picture pop on top of a light colored background.

Describing:
My project is of a soccer player named Harry Kane. The object next to him is England. I chose that because it represents me and also the athlete on the page. Everything goes together in this piece. The bold lines inside is the English flag to represent the country. This project was made in graphite pencil, H and 2B. I used H to shade the areas and 2B to darken certain places to show dimension. I made my piece because I really like drawing portraits and I also like the challenge of the shading of the human face and also clothing. The shading around the silhouette made it look like it was sinking into the page to show dimension. The shading under the lines of the flag showed it moving in the wind.

Analyze:
My project's principle of design would be movement and also and balance. With the two pictures being the same size, shows balance and also harmony. My project's composition arrangement was not try and not make everything in the middle. All of my art teacher have always told me to not always have you composition in the middle of the page. I put the pieces side by side and I also tried to make them to same size so that your eyes don' just go to one art piece. My master and current artist both used graphite, but I used them show me how I should shade the face of the person. I used Michelangelo's "Head of a Young Man" to show me the shading of the face when they aren't looking straight at the camera or artist. I used Michelle Cox's portraits to show me current people and how they were shaded.

Interpretation:
My project's meaning was to show and tell people where I am from and also something I enjoy. The person symbolizes the sport I enjoy to watch and also a huge part of my family. The silhouette and the flag both represent my country and also the country to athlete is from. All together they all come together to represent me and the main parts of my life. I thought putting the flag would give then viewer more ideas as to what may be the purpose of the silhouette.

Judgement:
My project's strengths I believe would be the person. I believe that when you put the pictures next to each other, you can tell it is him. The one problem I had was the silhouette. I wish I shaded more and maybe add more to it, but I really like how I didn't just draw the lines straight. I tried to make the lines look like it was a flag flying in the wind. I really think that the person brings the piece together. The project would be really dull and plain if I didn't add as much detail and I did. Overall, I believe that I should have got a better grade than I got. I believe that I idea of drawing a person makes the project more challenging for the artist. The shading of the human features is what made this project time consuming for me.
